Plasticizers are added to increase the flexibility of the coating. They prevent the dried coating from becoming brittle and enable the coating to better adapt to the deformation of the substrate without cracking. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a common example. It can insert itself between the polymer molecular chains of the coating, increasing the distance between the chains and thus lowering the glass – transition temperature of the polymer, making the coating more flexible.
